•Australian boulder opal is a brilliant speckled blue/purple colour combination with loads of fire- very strongly coloured
•opal weighs 3.98 carats, is 15.9 mm long x 7.8 mm wide
•band is approximately 2 mm wide at its narrowest and 4 mm wide toward the opal; band is around 2 mm thick at its thickest
•ready to ship
•Size 7
•ring has been given a light brushed finish to accentuate the scalloped texture of the surface
•ring should be resizable but it needs to go to a jeweller who specializes in resizing and repair (see below information on resizing); I cannot resize for you nor advise on where to get the resizing work done if needed
•overall weight of ring is 8.94 grams; minus weight of opal, there is approximately 7 grams of gold in this ring
•casting is solid with no hollow areas; there is a small drill hole in the underside of the bezel which helped me during the stone setting process
•When considering the scale of this ring: I have huge hands, with a size 6.5 pinkie finger. My ring finger is around a 9, which is larger than the average man's ring finger. If you are unsure of the detailed dimensions provided in this listing and are having trouble envisioning how large this is in real life, please use a metric ruler for reference.
This custom ring is built around a super-shimmery and brilliantly coloured purple and blue Australian boulder opal. No matter what angle you look at this opal from, there is loads of brilliant colour. The opal cutter gave this a really nice, glossy finish. This opal does have one small natural divot at its surface in the lower left hand area… I’m not sure if this is visible in the photos or not, but if it is, this is a natural part of the surface of the opal, and is not damage to the stone.
This ring is substantial and absolutely one-of-a-kind. I built it using the lost wax casting method. First, I built by hand a wax model of what I wanted the ring to look like. When I was satisfied with its form and textures, I sent it to local casting house to have it cast in 14k yellow gold. When it returned to the studio, I sent the Australian boulder opal into the ring. This is a substantially weighted ring; it does not feel 'heavy' on the hand, but it definitely has some weight to it. There are endless textures on this ring, which has a really molten and organic sort of a form. I decorated the ring with six cast in place gold granulation/gold orbs. For the final finish, I went over this with a steel brush on a rotary tool; this helps to accentuate the layers of texture without making things too shiny.
This will fit a size 7 finger. If you'd like it up to a size 7.5, I can do this for you by sanding out the inside of the band. This will increase the ring size and reduce the overall gold weight. Let me know if you have questions about this. Any larger than an 7.5 or anything smaller than its current size, you could discuss resizing with your local jeweller who specializes in ring resizing and repair. I cannot gaurantee that they can do this work for you nor what their results might be if they do resize, so please be sure if you buy this with the intention of having another jeweller resize it for you; I am have no liability for this and your workmanship guarantee is null and void if you do so.
From Geology.com:
What is Boulder Opal?
Boulder opal is a rock that contains thin seams and patches of opal surrounded by or attached to its natural host rock. The cutter studies this rock and decides how to cut the best possible gem. That gem might be cut to display seams and patches of precious opal as they appear within their natural host rock. Alternatively, the gem might be cut in an orientation that presents a thin seam of precious opal as the face of the gem with its natural host rock as a backing.
Some people also consider "boulder opal" to be an ingenious cutting style that beautifully utilizes small seams and patches of precious opal that are too small to cut into gems of solid opal.
The boulder opal in my ring is as described above: a think seam of brilliant opal that is still attached to its host rock. If you could see this opal from the side, you would see the upper layer of the opal material, and then the underlying host rock section, which is a deep brown. Boulder opal is not a 'solid' opal where the stone is opal through-and-through; if you have any questions about boulder opals, just get in touch.

If you are unsure of your ring size, the best way to be sized accurately is by visiting two commercial jewelers. Please ensure they size you using their thin sizing tools- not the wide band sizing tools, nor by having you try on rings from their display.
If any questions arise around being properly sized, I am always happy to help- contact me through the shop, or at treloar@telus.net
I don’t provide a gift wrapping service. Rings and earrings ship in jewelry boxes that are hot foil stamped with the Specimental logo.
If the person for whom you are purchasing the piece shares your address, please be aware of the following: International export law dictates that the detailed contents of packages, and their value, be clearly marked on the outside of the package. This means that if they see the package before you do, they can easily tell what they are being gifted with.
Need secrecy for this delivery? The very best option is to have your package held for you at your closest Fed Ex store- if you are unsure of its location, I'm happy to help.
Our hands are busy objects, and any ring worn on a finger can become accidentally damaged. All rings need regular maintenance. Make sure you are buying your raw diamond ring from a jeweler with the knowledge and experience needed to ensure your stone stays put. Ask them about their warranty and their repair/upkeep policy. Look at how frequently they work with raw diamonds, and assess whether they have the technical experience to create a ring that will last your lifetime.
I stand behind each piece of jewellery I make. If something goes wrong with your ring, at any time- you slam your finger in a drawer and crush the band, you break a prong, you smash and crack your stone- you can count on me to support you with the repair.
My gold is all recycled- the metal plant I purchase it from has been in business for over 100 years. They smelt their metals to the highest environmental standards, to cause the least impact on the environment. They do not deal with newly mined metals, as these metals cause much greater destruction to the environment.
There is no visible difference between recycled metals and newly-mined metals. There is also no difference as far as the karat of the metals go- 18k recycled gold is exactly the same in constitution as 18k newly mined gold. The vast majority of my clients prefer their metals recycled, as environmental impact is of concern when choosing the perfect piece of jewelry.
I can use your heirloom stones in a new design. The stones must be pulled from their settings and checked for stability by a professional jeweler prior to shipping them to me. I cannot recycle your gold. I am not set up to smelt gold in the studio, so am not able to melt down your old gold pieces for you.
My current production times are listed in my shop announcement. If you need something more quickly, please get in touch via the shop, or at treloar@telus.net
Depending upon my work and family schedule, I am happy to accommodate your rush orders. There is no additional charge for a rush order. However, please do get in touch prior to ordering to discuss your deadline with me.
Yes! All of my pieces are completely hand fabricated in the studio by me, from raw materials. I am able to create any of my designs with any stone, in any composition. In short, you can have your ring absolutely any way you like it. Contact me through the shop, or via treloar@telus.net to get the discussion around your perfect piece of jewelry started.
A raw diamond is an exceptionally difficult stone to set properly. Their unique shape means that a custom setting needs to be fabricated for each and every stone. The way in which the setting is closed around the diamond must be approached in a very particular fashion.
I began setting these stones into my rings in 2009, when only a small handful of jewelers were working with this type of stone. As the appeal of raw diamonds has exploded, countless numbers of jewelers are now incorporating them into their designs. I have set thousands of raw diamonds into my pieces since then.
